The Ganga’s holy water, also known as Gangajal, is used as sacred water in all of Hinduism’s many rites. Because of its immense significance, holy water from the Ganges is maintained in every home as a representation of wealth, purity, and holiness. The ambitious Bihar Gangajal Apurti Yojana 2024 (the availability of Ganga water scheme) was introduced by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday at Rajgir, Nalanda district. On this occasion, Mr Kumar outlined the initiatives his administration has taken to develop all of the state’s sacred places. “The Ganga water that has now entered your home will be used for everything, including bathing, cooking, and drinking. Through this, the level of the groundwater will also be preserved. The district’s temples and the recently inaugurated Nalanda International University will also receive Ganga water under the yojana.

Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, on Sunday launched Bihar Gangajal Apurti Yojana in the Nalanda district that will purify floodwaters before distributing them to homes in the southern portion of the state. He states that the Ganga Water Supply Scheme (GWSS) was designed with the needs of the four towns in southern Bihar for the next 50 years in mind after its launch in Rajgir. The project will offer a total of 135 litres per person. The provision of holy Ganga water will be provided to two districts in Nalanda and Gaya in the first phase of the 4,000 crore yojana under the government’s Jal, Jivan aur Hariyali mission. About 7.5 lakh households in Nalanda, Gaya, and the Buddhist town of Bodh Gaya will begin receiving Ganga water through pipes as part of the yojana on November 28.

Benefits of Bihar Gangajal Apurti Yojana
- According to the project, every family of five will receive 135 litres of piped Ganga water each day via a 151-km pipe running from Hatidah in the Patna district to three massive reservoirs situated at three different locations.
- The yojana is expected to cost $4,500 crore.
- Two districts in Nalanda and Gaya would be covered in the first phase of the 4,000 crore yojana under the government’s Jal, Jivan aur Hariyali mission for the supply of holy Ganga water “for all purposes.”

Eligibility Criteria
- The scheme is Implemented mainly in Southern areas of Bihar such as Nalanda, Bodh Gaya, and Gaya.

Bihar Gangajal Apurti Yojana 2023 Statement by State’s Water Resource Minister
Sanjay Kumar Jha, the state’s minister of water resources, states that “this is the first instance in India when floodwater is captured for drinking. It will serve as a model for managing flooding. According to Mr. Jha, “the project has received international recognition for having achieved four Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs]: good health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action.
